How to build your first model portfolio online

Your first portfolio should make it easy to understand the work you want to do and see a small, considered selection of photographs. Start with the material you have permission to share, and add to it as your experience grows.

1. Choose the purpose before the photos

Write a sentence about the kinds of projects you would like to hear about. Commercial, lifestyle, fashion and fitness projects may call for different work. Your portfolio does not need to claim every category: choose the closest fit and explain your interests in plain language.

2. Select a clear cover

The cover is the first image someone sees in a directory or shared profile. Choose a current photograph in which you are easy to recognise. Check it at phone size as well as full size. Avoid contact information, watermarks you do not have permission to use, readable addresses and other people in the frame.

3. Give each supporting photograph a reason to be there

Try a simple sequence: a clear portrait, a wider view, then photographs relevant to your chosen category. This is a planning example, not an agency’s submission requirement. Leave a space unused if its only alternative is a duplicate or an image you are uncomfortable sharing.

ModelSubmission supports up to six separately selected portfolio photos. You can reorder them and change the cover. Photos from private agency applications are not automatically copied into your public portfolio.

4. Write a short, truthful introduction

I’m [professional or stage name], based in [city or region]. I’m interested in [types of projects]. I’m [new to modelling / brief relevant experience]. I would like to hear about [specific kinds of professional opportunities].

Replace the placeholders with your own information. Being new is a valid starting point. Do not invent clients, representation or bookings, and do not put your telephone number, exact address or email into public text.

5. Review as a visitor

  • Can someone understand your location and interests quickly?
  • Does each image add something useful?
  • Are all photos current and permitted for sharing?
  • Does your saved preview contain only information you want public?
  • Do you know how to pause enquiries or unpublish?

6. Publish deliberately, then share the link

On ModelSubmission, saving an introduction or adding photos leaves a private draft. Publishing is a separate choice with consent. Once public, you can copy your portfolio link into a professional biography or share it directly for an opportunity. Existing copies or search results may remain after you unpublish.

Use the comp-card builder if a portable summary is useful. For an agency’s own submission form, read its instructions and use our application checklist; a public portfolio does not replace those requirements.
